In March 1979 the Governor of Hong Kong, Murray MacLehose, paid his first official visit to the People's Republic of China (PRC), taking the initiative to raise the question of Hong Kong's sovereignty with Deng Xiaoping. في مارس 1979، قام محافظ هونغ كونغ موراي ماكلوز بأول زيارة رسمية له لجمهورية الصين الشعبية، حيت أخذ بزمام المبادرة لرفع مسألة سيادة هونغ كونغ مع الزعيم الصيني دينج شياو بينج.
Upon the end of British rule and the transfer of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China in 1997, most of the civil functions of this office went to the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and military functions went to the Commander of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison. بعد انتهاء الحكم البريطاني للمدينة عام 1997 ونقل ملكيتها إلى جمهورية الصين الشعبية، نقلت معظم مهامّ محافظ هونغ كونغ المدنية إلى منصبٍ جديد هو رئيس هونغ كونغ التنفيذي، أما مهامه العسكرية فقد باتت من واجب قائد حامية هونغ كونغ التابعة لجيش التحرير الشعبي الصيني.
